Are Lawn Care Treatments Safe if You Have Pets? What You Should Know

Those of us here at Grassperson know how important your pets are to you. In fact, they are more than just pets but a part of your family. Many of us also have pets and feel the same way about our four-legged companions.

For that reason, we understand why people often ask us: Is lawn care dangerous for pets?

It’s a question we are frequently asked and we always assure homeowners that our lawn care is safe for pets. But we want to help put your mind at ease and answer some more of your questions as well as provide some information that can help ensure your pet’s continued safety.

After all, we know that you care about having a beautiful and lush green lawn, but that you don’t want to produce those results at the expense of safety in any way.

Are Lawn Treatments Safe for Pets?

To dive more into this question, we want to be clear that lawn care is safe for pets when product safety is being prioritized.

That’s an important point that cannot be overlooked. In other words, even if you have safe products, but you go out and apply them improperly (or you don’t follow best practices), you can diminish that safety factor. Therefore, it’s incredibly important that any lawn care company you are working with is using both safe products and best practices.

At Grasspeson, we are using high-quality, professional-grade products that have been rigorously tested by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

We are also applying these products as directed. And we’re using highly trained and licensed lawn care technicians to apply these products.

The truth is, all of that combined really does make a huge difference in safety and you shouldn’t accept anything less. We find that homeowners sometimes assume that performing DIY lawn care might actually be safer but in reality, homeowners don’t typically have the training or experience to apply products and that can make even lower-quality, less-potent products unsafe.

When you work with a professional, you are getting higher-quality, more effective products, and you’re also getting them applied properly.

When Can Dogs be Let Out Following a Lawn Care Application?

Another question that we often get in regard to pet safe lawn care, is how long homeowners should wait to let their dog (or dogs) out following a lawn care application? Naturally, pet parents want to make sure that they are waiting the appropriate amount of time.

We advise waiting a minimum of two hours to four for liquid products, in order to ensure that they have fully dried.

Of course, there are factors, like temperature, that can impact this. If it’s the heat of the summer, liquid products are going to dry faster than that.

At Grassperson, we always put a sign in the yard when we complete our service and that also has our wait time recommendation on it as a reminder.

Dogs, Fences, and Pet Safe Lawn Care

Since we are talking about pet safe lawn care, we also want to talk about fences and gates as many of our clients here in North Texas have them. And on a nice day, it’s quite common for pet dogs to spend a lot of time in yards here.

One thing that we do sometimes encounter when coming out to treat a lawn is that the dog (or dogs) are already outside—and sometimes the homeowner isn’t home.

We do ask that dogs be inside when we come to treat a lawn. That is both for their safety and ours. Even if the homeowner tells us that it’s okay with them for us to treat the lawn while their dog is outside, it’s just not something that we would do. We would still treat the front yard, but we would wait to treat the back.

The same goes for kids. If children are outside playing or maybe having a pool party, then we would treat the front yard and not the backyard, and we would make a note that the technician will be in touch.

All of this behooves the importance of working with a lawn care company that is willing to do a call-ahead before arriving to treat your lawn. If you are someone who does frequently have the dogs outside or maybe even leaves them outside when you aren’t home, it helps to work with a company that is willing to notify you ahead of coming to your home so that you can make appropriate arrangements.

Dogs and Gates

Along with that point above, we also want to talk about closing and latching gates. After all, you know how important keeping the gate closed is when you have a dog that frequently uses the yard!

Even though we aren’t treating the yard while pets are outside, we do make a point to close and latch gates as we know you might be letting the dog out later.

The last thing that you want to worry about is the idea that your lawn care technician forgot to close the gate.

To help give you even more confidence in that area, part of our process for yards with fences actually involves the lawn care technician taking a picture of the gate when he or she arrives and again when he or she leaves. We understand the importance of keeping gates closed and latched because (as we mentioned previously), we have pets, too!

We understand that some companies have gotten a bad rap for leaving the gate open and the pet escaping later in the day. But at Grassperson, this is one of many safety measures that we frequently address with our lawn care technicians so that we can avoid problems. We truly want homeowners to feel confident that they are receiving pet safe lawn care.

Choosing a Lawn Care Company that Cares about Pet Safe Lawn Care

We completely understand that homeowners want to feel confident that lawn care is safe for pets. Your pets are incredibly important to you and you care about making decisions that are in their best interest.

All of that boils down to choosing a lawn care company that cares about your pets’ safety.

We know that the lawn care industry sometimes gets a bad rap from those companies out there who fail to perform best practices. They rush through applications, overapply products, or send out lawn care technicians who just don’t really seem to care about the work they do.

But it’s important that you know not all lawn care companies operate this way. There are some really great lawn care companies out there that truly care about the work they do—and that their lawn care is safe for pets.

At Grassperson, we do take safety incredibly seriously. As we mentioned, many of us are pet parents, too. We know that the yard is important to our pups and that we don’t want to do anything to compromise their safety when they play in it!

In order to be able to feel confident that lawn care is safe for pets, you must make a wise choice in lawn care companies. Unfortunately, we cannot confidently tell you that all lawn care is safe for pets, and that’s because not all lawn care companies follow best practices.

But we can tell you that Grassperson is keeping safety at the forefront.

At the end of the day, we want you to be able to have the best of both worlds—the best-looking lawn on the block that is still safe for your pets to play in, too. In the end, having a great lawn should never have to come in the way of your pets’ safety.

Fortunately, it doesn’t have to. With your wise choice in lawn care, you can have it all!
