Companion planting is an important factor in the success of your North Texas landscape. According to the Almanac, companion planting is best defined as two plants growing close together for the benefit of one or both of those plants.
Companion planting also means considering which plants have similar growing conditions (such as how much moisture and sunlight they need). And when companion planting with flowers, you would also want to consider the aesthetic component (that is, flowers that look good together).
Because we want you to get the most possible enjoyment out of your landscape, we’ve rounded up a list of flowers that grow well together by season.
The following flowers are good companion plants for one another.
Both petunias and tulips are beautiful flowers on their own. But planting them together can really increase the wow factor. Petunias are lower-growing and work well in front of tulips which are tall and majestic. You’ll want to think about complementing colors like pink and purple or yellow and orange.
Violas can be another good companion planting choice for tulips since they bloom around the same time.
Both of these are hardy plants that can withstand the North Texas heat. They pair well together. In this case, the Angelonia grows tall, while the Pentas remains more compact. Both the look and the growing conditions complement one another.
Purple fountain grass is an ornamental grass known for its spiky purple flowers that appear to spray out from its base. Potato Ivy, which is more of a low-growing vine will pair well. The combination is often used in container gardens.
As far as flowers to plant together in the fall, here are some possibilities.
The bright colorful foliage of the Croton plant looks even more beautiful with golden marigolds or mums in front. Since croton varieties are available in shades of red, orange, and yellow, they really pair nicely with the autumn shades of mums and marigolds.
Dusty Miller is known for its silver foliage which actually helps it to pair well with almost anything (just like white pretty much goes with everything!). But we personally really like it with bright and bold pansies and violas.
Both ornamental cabbage and kale are staples of a fall landscape and both pair well with Dianthus flowers. Other cold-tolerant annuals that could pair well with ornamental cabbage or kale include Pansies, Petunias, and Snapdragons.
We know that figuring out flowers that look good together…and grow well together…can be complicated.
That’s why we have created something we’ve come to call the “Grassperson Mix.” This is an optimal mix of seasonal flowers that look and perform well together. It totally removes the guesswork of figuring any of this out.
Oftentimes, homeowners will just tell us they want the “Grassperson Mix” (or maybe some variation of it). It makes their landscape really pop with just the right mix of flowers to plant together.
Here’s what we typically include in our seasonal Grassperson Mixes.
Figuring out flowers that look good together is ultimately just one piece of the puzzle.
You’ll also want to think about your overall color scheme and layout as well as spacing and grouping. Spreading flowers “here and there” around your property isn’t going to have any wow factor. When they are scattered about, your landscape can actually begin to look cluttered.
There should be a keen eye for design that goes into the layout process.
At the end of the day, if you just want to remove all the guesswork it might make the most sense to partner with a landscaping professional.
Flowers actually end up having a big contribution to your landscape design. Your landscaping is not only directly linked to the value of your home but it’s also inevitably tied to how much you enjoy your property on a daily basis.
For that reason, it’s important that you choose wisely when it comes to landscaping enhancement work such as seasonal color.
At Grassperson, we can help. We know that you want something that wows, and we’re ready to deliver. Whether you want the Grassperson Mix or some other companion planting choices, we can help you come up with just the right combination of flowers to give you exactly the look that you desire.
